NOTES:
For amplified cello quintet and drum kit.
- Cellos should be amplified via a contact microphone or close mic-placement.
- The cellos should have a wide dynamic range without becoming too distorted. Some distortion is permissible, even desired, but not so much that it compromises the over-all balance.
PROGRAM NOTES
I’ve been a heavy metal fan since I began playing music. The naked aggression, the adrenaline inducing energy, the driving rhythms, the scary sometimes post-human vocals; this was the perfect thing for an angsty, angry teenager to fall into. It was the first medium to really show me the potential for pure, raw, unadulterated expression. And not only expression, but the way to really craft and orchestrate gigantic walls of sound that fills amphitheaters and blows out eardrums.
This is the kind of raw energy that I tried to capture in Joyful Noise.
